Printable Preschool Planner Stickers

Printable Preschool Planner Stickers - I have made some Printable Preschool Planner Stickers to help make organizing your calendar easier for your Preschooler or Nursery School.

Have you got hooked on planners and planning yet?  Searching Michael’s for planner stickers?  I sure have been!  Along with Etsy, but I haven’t quite found what I am looking for, with my daughter in Nursery School and my son scheduled to start soon I decided to make my own Printable Preschool Planner Stickers.

If you are just getting into planning you may wonder what you need, I’m here to help you!

  • My favourite PlannerAn awesome planner.  I like the Create 365, The Happy Planner.  Personal preference, but I like how there are three slots per day. I have a home business, blogging stuff, and regular day to day kids, school, schedules to keep track of so having the three slots means I can track it all in one place.   If you go to the Michael’s website and get a 50% off coupon it makes the cost much cheaper!
  • Pens. A fun collection of fine tip markers, coloured pens, and other writing implements, I love coloured pens!  I use them to keep track of different things. Usually pink to keep track of stuff for my daughter, purple to keep track of my stuff, blue for my son, green for my blog, hot pink for my work, etc.
  • The best Planner BagA good planner bag. Like this one from Thirty-One.  It’s actually a hanging travelling case, but it fits my stickers, pens, markers, planner, etc.  Having a bag where I can keep all of my tools together makes things easier, then whenever I need to add something to the calendar or planner I grab the bag and have everything I need.
  • Stickers.   This is the best part, stickers to decorate your planner with, seasonal, inspirational, to do, etc.  You can use stickers to decorate your planner like a scrapbook, keep track of important events and holidays, whatever, it’s your planner!

Printable Preschool Planner Stickers - I have made some Printable Preschool Planner Stickers to help make organizing your calendar easier for your Preschooler or Nursery School.

Who else needs Preschool Planner Stickers!

I need some very specific stickers to accommodate the events at my daughter’s Nursery School.  My daughter belongs to a co-op so I bring snack once a month, my hubby cleans toys once a month, and I am on the board and have board meetings.  They have lots of fun theme parties, field trips, and other events, so by designing my own Printable Preschool Planner Stickers it made life much easier!

Materials Needed for Printable Planner Stickers

Ready to print your own stickers yet?

I discovered you can print your own stickers by getting full sticker sheets at the store!  Game changer for planning when I need specific stickers, I can make my own.  Just in case you could use them too I am sharing them!

8 Ways to keep Toddler Busy while Nursing

8 Ways to keep Toddler Busy while Nursing - Nursing a newborn means a lot of sitting quietly, but what about your toddler how do you keep them busy. Try these 8 Ways to keep Toddler Busy while Nursing

Nursing I found was one of the hardest things to do on my own with two kids.  Keeping toddler occupied and quiet while you try to feed baby quietly and get them to sleep is a big challenge.  It can be done, but honestly needs a lot of planning and organization.  Try these 8 Ways to keep Toddler Busy while Nursing.

One of the big problems my toddler had was that she was left out and needed attention too.  The best activities were things we could do together WHILE I was breastfeeding so she was included but quiet.  The first few weeks I end up living on the couch with a sleeping baby to my breast.  But my daughter misses me too, so I soon learned she needed activities too!!  Please enjoy these 8 Ways to keep Toddler Busy while Nursing, great for any new mom, or ideas on presents to get a mom to be of two or a big sibling gift.

8 Ways to keep Toddler Busy while Nursing - Nursing a newborn means a lot of sitting quietly, but what about your toddler how do you keep them busy. Try these 8 Ways to keep Toddler Busy while Nursing

Activities you can do with your toddler are:

If your toddler is anything like mine be prepared before sitting down.  Sometimes that means baby has to fuss for five minute while you grab stuff, but, it’s better than starting all over again and having a crankynewborn.  Are you potty training? If toddler is potty trained make them go potty.  Even if they claim they don’t have too, do it anyway.  We had a few accidents as toddler always had to pee while feeding and I couldn’t always get her there in time.

  • Flash cards – shapes, colours, numbers, animals, alphabets, etc. go over them together.
  • Make busy books & bags so they have activities to do quietly.
  • Colouring – get a little tray so they can do it next to you.
  • Stickers – get the big stickers books, little sticker books or just regular stickers to put on paper.
  • Shape puzzles.
  • TV – I know not ideal right? Well, you have a newborn and they have needs too.  If putting toddler in front of the TV can buy you some quiet time to put baby down for their nap and nursing then that’s what you have to do.  You can always pick educational shows if it bugs you, but seriously sometimes it is the only option and that’s ok.  It won’t last forever, toddler needs a treat too and you need a break.
  • Get them a drink and snack.  Preferably stuff that won’t make a mess when they spill it like water (not juice that stuff is so sticky when they leave it to leak on the floor) and raisins or crackers (not apple sauce, yogurt or anything with peanut butter).  Pouches are great healthy snacks too, with fruit or yogurt.
  • Snuggle!  Snuggle those two babies close together, it is hard now and not easy, but it won’t last long and they will be big sooner than you know it.  You won’t always be able to cuddle with two babies together so take advantage while they are small and cooperate!

The NUMBER ONE activity?

  • Basket of books: this was the number one quiet activity to do while nursing.  Have special books they have not really read before so they are more interesting.  If you have friends or relatives close by get them to do a library run every week or two for you to get some new books.  Turning the page can take some maneuvering, but get toddler to help.  It’s a great way to keep them included and work on their fine motor skills. If you have an iPad, tablet, smart phone, kindle etc., use e-books, easier to hold and there are an abundance out there.

This too shall pass

Having two little ones is challenging, you will not always be able to handle it easily, but you will figure it out and get in your groove. It will pass and things will get easier. As kids get older things get easier too!

What are your tips to survive nursing a newborn and keeping your toddler from wrecking the house and waking up baby?

My Four Favourite Baby Carrier’s plus a Giveaway

My Four Favourite Baby Carrier's plus a Giveaway - Baby wearing is amazing! Having the best baby sling or baby carrier is important. Here are my top four favourite baby carriers plus a giveaway!

I am frequently asked what kind of carriers I like and which I recommend.   I have been thinking and working on My Four Favourite Baby Carrier’s for a year to be honest.  I want to preface this by saying that carriers are like bra’s, very personal to shop for.  Each carrier fits each woman differently, and they also fit the baby’s differently too.  I firmly believe you need to try out a lot of carriers to find the one that fits you best.

I have a pinched sciatic nerve, which gives me a lot of back trouble, I was not sure I would be able to babywear at all.  I started with some of the cheap and free ones (Infantino stretchy and soft structure, Seven Slings free pocket ones) and found even with a newborn they hurt my back and were not that comfortable.  It did not take me long to realize I needed a better carrier.  My local baby store lets you try out carriers (for free!) for a few days and I found it really helpful.  I tried out four carriers before I found one that didn’t hurt my back.  I found that the carriers with the crossed straps in the back were the easiest on my back.

Are you looking for the best baby sling?  There are tons of amazing ones out there, but I am going to introduce you to My Four Favourite Baby Carrier’s plus a Giveaway at the bottom of the post so stick around!

My Four Favourite Baby Carrier's plus a Giveaway - Baby wearing is amazing! Having the best baby sling or baby carrier is important. Here are my top four favourite baby carriers plus a giveaway!

Please ensure you are practicing safe baby wearing, here is a great site to remind you of some important safety rules while baby wearing.

My Four Favourite Baby Carriers

Wrapsody Water WrapWrapsody Water Wrap

Honestly, I cannot stress my love of this wrap enough.  I use it so much and for so many things!  Bee was not very tolerant of being on her own for long, even while I showered.  I heard of a wrap I could wear in the shower so she could shower with me.  I literally went out the next day to buy it.  This was a life changer!  I could have nice long showers with a baby all happy and close on me and shower every day.

I wear this wrap a lot in the water while camping.  It is REALLY hot in a tent and can be near impossible for baby to sleep.  I put baby in the carrier, put a hat on their head to protect and shade from the sun then go to the beach and hang out in the water for an hour so they can sleep in cool comfort.  It works amazing!  On vacation this summer this was Po’s main way of napping during the day, my sister would watch Bee playing in the sand and I chatted with friends and enjoyed the water.

I also used it a lot as a newborn stretchy wrap (like a Moby, Baby K’tan, or Maman Kangaroo).  I started wearing Po when he was a few days old in my Wrapsody.  It is super comfortable and worked so well for him to be snuggled up against me.

Hopefully I have convinced you of how awesome this wrap is!  You can use it as a newborn stretchy wrap, lightweight wrap easily stashed in your diaper bag, and for in the water for showering or hanging out at the beach.

Beco SoleilBeco Soleil

This is my favourite soft-structured carrier.  I prefer to wear it with the straps crossed, but I can wear it regular in the front or as a back carry too.

Po napped in here in a front carry for the first 6 months of his life while I worked.  It was super comfy for me and a lot cooler than a stretchy wrap for him (he was a hot baby) and gave me lots of room to get my arms around him to type.

I also use this while running errands as it is super easy to put on and put him in, I also used it for Salsa Babies (baby wearing Latin dancing), while cooking/baking, going for walks, watching Bee at the park, pretty much anywhere.

When Bee got older I loved having her in a back carry.  I had SPD while I was pregnant so I couldn’t carry Bee without having excruciating pain in my pelvis.   Not all stores have carts kids can ride in and using a stroller wasn’t always an option so a carrier worked great.  She was also happy being up high and seeing everything.  It was also much safer in parking lots, I could not chase after a toddler, she was a lot faster than I was and I was worried about her safety so being in a carrier made me more comfortable and her out of harms way.

Toddler TulaToddler Tula

When I had Po my hubby got me a Toddler Tula!  I was so excited!  I could tandem wear them both, which I do not do often as they are heavy.  I found the Beco Soleil was a little small on Bee at this stage so this was much comfier on both of us.

My sister tends to wear Bee in the Tula more than I do as when we go somewhere I wear Po while she wears Bee.  It makes going to festivals and events so much more convenient.  Although she can walk, sometimes she is tired and with large crowds we prefer to baby wear them both and zip through places, not to mention we don’t have to worry about escalators, elevators, rocky slopes, or tight quarters.

Tula carrierTula

My final favourite carrier is the Standard Tula.  I didn’t get to wear this for long.  I had an amazing adventure with my son’s birth group in which we shared a Tula and it got shipped across Canada so everyone had a chance to wear their December 2014 baby in it.  You can check out my story on it here.  This is one of the most well-known brands and most popular so our group went with this Tula as the baby carrier, I only had it for two weeks (insert crying here) but I fell in love with the Tula and seriously debated getting a new pretty Tula in a fun print to enjoy with my son too.  It is similar to other soft-structure carriers too but super fun!

Family Movie Night

We started this new tradition of a Family Movie Night every week.  My son is almost two and my daughter three-and-a-half.  It is so much fun, we all snuggle up on the couch, put our phones away and watch a new movie together.

Family Movie Night - Do you celebrate Family Movie Night at your house? What makes it a success? Try these tips below to make any family movie night with your kids special.

Sometimes we put a little table in the living room and order in pizza or take-out food and enjoy dinner and a movie.  But more often (and to save my living room floor) we eat at the table then have a snack during movie time.

What makes a family movie night awesome?

Tasty Caramel & White Cheddar popcornThis week we had the chance to review Orville Redenbachers White Cheddar and Caramel popcorn for free from Influenster.  It was so much fun.  Neither of the kids had tried caramel popcorn before, and my son hadn’t really had much popcorn yet at all.  We all snuggled up to watch Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and munch on some popcorn while we watched the movie.  Although the caramel was by far my favourite, it does taste good in the same mouthful as a white cheddar, seriously, try them both in one bite, it’s tasty.   My kids polished off the whole bag with us, my son didn’t even watch the movie, just turned his chair towards the popcorn bowl to snack on it.

I forgot a lot from Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer from when I was a kid, they are MEAN to him!  Even Santa.  It is sad to watch with kids and my daughter is so sensitive she notices and wants to know why everyone is so mean to Rudolph.  She found the Abominable Snowman to be a little scary though.  But we all enjoyed the movie and popcorn and snuggles.  And the kids go to bed later so anything that delays bedtime is fine by them!

Family Movie Night - Do you celebrate Family Movie Night at your house? What makes it a success? Try these tips below to make any family movie night with your kids special.

What are your favourite movies to watch during family movie night?

What movie’s to watch?

We have done all the Land Before Times, almost all Disney movies, starting Ice Age, and are now focussing on Christmas movies.  It is my favourite night of the week when I can snuggle up on the couch and watch a movie with my family.  Sometimes I can even knit if both kids are snuggling with daddy.  Maybe I will finish my daughters hat before the end of winter.

There is something about watching classic Christmas movies that you grew up with, with your own children, by the light of the tree and keeping the magic of Christmas alive.  Next up, maybe Frosty the Snowman with some eggnog!

Other snack ideas:

  • Fresh popped popcorn
  • Chips
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Warm Milk
  • Cookies
  • Nuts
  • Oranges
  • Pretzels
  • Anything that is a special treat and fun to eat!  Bonus if it isn’t too messy so your floors don’t suffer.

What are your favourite snacks to enjoy at family movie night with your family??  Comment below and let me know!

Yule Sun Ice Catchers

Yule Sun Ice Catchers - Celebrate the Winter Solstice by making beautiful Yule Sun Ice Catchers, alone or with your kids, easy to make with ingredients you already have & fun!

It is almost time to celebrate the shortest day of the year, soon after the days start to get longer and we will see the sun more and more each day.  For this reason we celebrate the sun at the Winter Solstice, also known as Yule.  In our house I am always looking for ways to get the kids involved and excited in our celebrations too.  This year we are trying out these Yule Sun Ice Catchers after seeing some fun pictures on Pinterest.  What better way to celebrate the return of the sun than to make some Yule Sun Ice Catchers to catch the suns rays and make some pretty designs in the snow??

Follow Raising Fairies and Knights’s board Pagans Unite on Pinterest.

I have a toddler and a preschooler, so my crafts have to be easy for both of them to do, but slightly challenging for my preschooler so she won’t get bored. My son likes to be right in there though so I have to be creative and adapt the Yule Sun Ice Catchers craft for each of them.

Yule Sun Ice Catchers - Celebrate the Winter Solstice by making beautiful Yule Sun Ice Catchers, alone or with your kids, easy to make with ingredients you already have & fun!

Supplies Needed:

    • Water
    • Food Colouring
    • Circular Tupperware containers
    • Smaller containers filled with coins or nails to weigh them down.
    • Fun shaped ice cube containers if you have, or regular if you don’t
    • Thick ribbon

Directions

  • Before you get the kids excited and involved (depending on the age), find some circular empty Tupperware containers.  Stick the weighted down little containers inside it a few inches from the edge (you will thread the ribbon for the Yule Sun Ice Catchers through here). I used some empty play dough mini containers, or ones for making baby food.
  • Fill with water a few inches (as thick as you want it to be) and stick in the freezer for an hour to an hour and a half to start to set.
  • Grab some ice cube trays, fill with water, and either alone or with a child helper, put a few drops of food colouring in each one and freeze for an hour too.
  • Once set for an hour, get the kids out, let them use a spoon to poke the ice a little and break it.  There are a few different patterns you can try:

1 – drop a few coloured ice cubes inside the ice water
2 – let the kids use food colouring and drop a few drops in to the ice or freezing water
    3 – or do both!

  • Refreeze overnight until completely frozen.
  • Let sit in hot water until it can come out of the container.  If the weighted down circle isn’t coming out put hot water in that until it slides out.   Keep an eye on it as it will melt quickly.
  • Take out the weighted down circle and thread a ribbon through.
  • Hang the Yule Sun Ice Catchers outside and enjoy how pretty it is!!!

Final Results

My daughter was much better at the food colouring drops than my son was, he just squeezed the whole bottle so he got a lot more guidance, my daughter could do it more on her own.  My son probably made most of them more coloured than anticipated as he kept poking and stirring, but I still like how it turned out!

Camping Menu

EASY CAMPING MENU IDEAS - In need of an easy camping menu to make the most of your time outdoors? Tasty, easy and sure to get everyone eating? Check out these stand-byes.

Camping is so much fun but can be exhausting.  You want an easy camping menu that the kids will eat, minimal time to prepare, and not a lot of cooler space being used since it is at a premium while camping. It is the best time for good food, but with minimal amounts of effort!

These are my go-to meals to have on our camping menu that my kids actually eat.  I can prepare stuff  before we leave and easily grab extras in town to supplement as the cooler gets emptier so I can fill it again.  Pretty much tasty, easy meals, with minimal amounts of effort so we can spend more time chilling with friends, exploring nature, playing at the beach, or enjoying a campfire.

For breakfast we enjoy eating:

Banana MuffinsChocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins - FBYogurt, cereal, instant oatmeal, fruit, overnight oats premade at home and kept in the cooler.

We make muffins at home and pre-freeze them to stay fresh and keep the cooler cool.  It is such a great and easy breakfast or snack.  A staple of mine for sure when planning our camping menu.

If we feel like making more effort, then of course we do scrambled eggs and home fries, but it depends on our effort and cooler space. We also have to be mindful of keeping little hands away from the Coleman stove.  I look forward to making this next weekend camping though for breakfast.

For lunch we throw together:

Easy Lunch Quesadillas - IGUsually a modge-podge of things.  I pre-cut veggies for sandwiches and to dip in hummus or another veggie dip.  Hard boiled eggs, sliced cheese, crackers/pita/tortilla/buns.   I pre-make chickpea salad and/or egg salad sandwich filling for easy sandwiches.  Or we just stick to PB & J since it is easy and the kids love it.

Salsa & chips is a favourite too.  We may even eat it with leftovers from dinner (taco salad, chili, etc.).  My kids love black beans so that’s an easy thing to throw in with the salsa to eat.

One of my good friends always pre-makes quesadillas to bring camping and my kids swarm her like flies to get bites too.  Wrap them in tin foil, then toss in a zip lock bag to keep it out of the water at the bottom of the cooler.

Looking for some #easycampingmeals check out these favs #campingfood #campfirefood Click To Tweet

For dinner we enjoy:

Dinnertime we usually have everyone contribute stuff to make joint meals easier.  These are our favourites.

Dorito SaladDorito salad, or walking tacos, or quinoa taco salad, all the same thing.  Perfect because like tacos everyone personalizes theirs so you get exactly what you want.  A great hit with the kids.

Crockpot Vegetarian Pasta SaucePasta is always super easy, especially if you throw together a salad to go on the side.  I make the pasta sauce in advance so it has some protein in it to make it more filling, but you can even just bring a jar of tomato sauce and use that.  Plain still tastes good!  Again, if pre-made I freeze it in zip lock bags to stay fresh until we eat it and also help keep the cooler cold.

We make frozen chili in advance too (again freeze in zip lock bags to stay fresh and keep the cooler cold).  We add whatever fits in the cooler and we have on hand, nacho chips, grated cheese, cut up avocados, sour cream, etc.  It is always a big hit and super filling.

Hobo Dinner IGOf course if you have a campfire you can roast veggie or meat hot dogs on it for a fun hands-on meal everyone is sure to enjoy.

If you start the campfire early enough you can always make foil dinners.   These are a favourite of ours while camping, but they take two hours to cook by the fire so make sure you start them early or plan for a late dinner.

Banana Boats - Try making these delicious camping desserts on the open fire, or at home for a camping feel. Easy to personalize and make vegan. Is it time for dessert yet?

If you have a campfire then you can make Banana boats for dessert!!  THE BEST CAMPING DESSERT!

Pete the Cat Rocking School Shoes - IG

This month in the Monthly Crafting Book Club we are focussing on books related to back to school.  There are so many AMAZING back to school books that it is way more fun to see what everyone comes up with then by all doing the same  book.

After visiting the lirary and browsing their selection of books my daughter fell in love with Pete the Cat and his Rocking School Shoes.  In 24 hours I have had to read it at least 10 times…….. Thank goodness it’s a library book and goes back in a few weeks!  Anyways, after reading it I knew a craft with Pete’s red shoes would be PERFECT!  So we decided to get messy and do a painting activity for Pete’s red shoes.

Pete the Cat - Rocking in my school shoes - Come read the book and make the fun craft with your toddler/preschooler/child.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Pete the Cat Book
  • BIG paper, or a roll of paper
  • red paint
  • A marker
  • Rain boots
  • A bucket
  • Plastic plate
  • Soap
  • Optional: a kiddy pool all set up…..

HOW TO DO IT

First we filled up a bucket with soap and I got the kids to wash their boots, clean boots are important for painting with them.  While the kids did that I filled up their kiddy pool for easy washing once they are done getting messy.

13912898_10157385247345245_7224492434373789724_n

I chose to use rain boots instead of flip flops or running shoes because my kids are little and rain boots won’t be as slippery, plus it won’t ruin their shoes.

14046013_10157385247105245_2053513021945463001_n

I put a plate on the floor with red paint, then had them step in the paint with their boots and dance around the paper to make their cool cat rocking shoe foot print.

13906689_10157385247255245_2306186753301551310_n

They were having so much fun we also tried one without the boots in their bare feet in the paint.  They loved that too!  Squishy, squashy, messy fun!

When they were done we wrote a fun quote from the book on the paper and hung it up to dry.  Now for swimming bath time fun!

I love this activity as even my one and a half year old son can easily participate too.  My three year old daughter gets stimulated but so does my son.  It can be hard to find activities that they will both enjoy and painting, especially with boots, is such an easy and fun one!

Quesadillas

Easy Lunch Quesadillas

Recipe Type: Mexican

Cuisine: Vegetarian

Author: Hil

Ingredients

  • Salsa
  • Black Beans
  • A pack of tortillas
  • Shredded cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350.
  2. Set your tortillas open on baking sheets.
  3. Scoop in a few spoonful’s of salsa, a handful of shredded cheese and a handful or two of black beans on one half of the tortilla.
  4. Close tortilla in half and repeat until your baking sheet is full (I tend to make two sheets full).
  5. Place in the oven for about 15 minutes, enough so the cheese melts but not so the tortilla starts to get crispy. You can even put a pot lid on top of the quesadillas to help keep them flat while cooking.
  6. Take the quesadillas out of the oven and let cool, wrap in foil or put in lunch containers for the week.

We Are Knitters – Katja Cape knitting review

We Are Knitters - Katja Cape review - My first knitting project and I took on the Katja Cape from We Are Knitters, come check out the results and how easy it is to take up knitting!

I have always loved knitting and wanted to learn to knit.  I learned how to do it as a kid and used to keep my knitting in the van for long car rides.  Unfortunately,  my dad’s van got stolen and that was the end of my knitting since my stuff was gone.  My Granny was an amazing knitter and used to make amazing doggy sweaters, mitts, scarfs, and stuffed animals. I always wanted to figure it out but arthritis kicked in before I was able to learn from her.

Knitting 5When I was approached by We Are Knitters to try out one of their products I was SUPER excited!  Being a beginner they helped guide me towards the beginner projects that I could tackle. I chose to do the Katja shawl.  I choose the colours and eagerly awaited my shipment in the mail.  It was super fast.

Starting Off

Knitting 3I watched the instructional videos over and over again and attempted to start my project.  Well….. there certainly was a learning curve.  I had to re-start three times, but that was due to my ability not the project.  Luckily I had a girls weekend with my friends coming up.  A good friend of mine is an AMAZING knitter (she knit my son a cardigan that still fits him a year later) she took one look at it and encouraged me to rip it apart and start again.  With her help I was now on the right track and could tackle the project.  I suppose starting off with thick wool and chunky wooden needles wasn’t the easiest project to start with, but with her help I was well underway and loving how it looked!

Knitting 4I brought this with me everywhere, with two young kids I could only do a row here and there so it took me a LONG time.  It should have been faster, but oh well.  The next one I am sure I can do in half the time. It came with me to my daughters gymnastics practice to do as I watched, in the car as my husband drove for vacations, outside while watching my kids play, and camping with my other knitting friends.  We may have looked dorky all sitting there knitting, but I  thought we looked cool.

Knitting 2Practice Makes Perfect

My biggest issue was I kept picking up stitches randomly while I knitted.  I would count at the end, and have an extra stitch or two each line.  Soooo my knitting doesn’t look even, but that is because I had to keep dropping stitches I had picked up.  Although I did the same pattern the whole way along, the beginning was really loose because I was just learning, I kept messing up my stitch count and I got tighter at the end.  Whatever, I love it and for my first piece of knitting I think it looks great.

Knitting 1Review

I honestly had so much fun doing this piece and really recommend it.  Even with  NO experience (I really don’t count a row or two in the car at age 11) I made this.  If you want to try and learn to knit the Katja Cape like me, this kit (or another beginner one) would be PERFECT for you.  I cannot recommend it enough.  It was a great way to de-stress and have some me time, even with the kids.  Grab a cuppa tea or wine (depending on the time….) and your knitting and you can supervise and interact with your kids while you knit.

What do you guys think?

I have a birthday coming up next month and am I am already planning out which kit I want to do next.  These two kits are at the top of my list, so hopefully someone gives one to me!  The Cub Scarf on the left I would need extra wool so I can make one for each of my kids, but I would love one in adult size too!  Otherwise the cloak on the right would be for me 🙂

Getting your Freedom Back as a Mom

Getting Your freedom back as a mom - ig

This past week I had the amazing experience to go camping with my two wonderful children (3 and 1.5 years old), my sister, friends, and other acquaintances at an awesome festival we visit each year.  It is an amazing experience, the only place I go where I can really feel the “village” still has an effect.  Everyone helps to look after each other’s kids (even the child-less adults are moms for the week), we don’t wear shoes and get to run wild in nature hearing bands, attending workshops,  doing crafts at Munchkinland for the kids, swimming daily, and playing at the park.

I have been attending this festival every year for about eight or nine years.  I did it last year with a 2 year old and seven month old baby, and honestly it was hell.  Trying to juggle the two of them (even with help) was awful.  I was an emotional wreak and broke down more than once.  Trying to get the two of them to cooperate for naps and bedtime was just awful, after last year where it was seriously challenging and hard I knew no matter what this year could not be as bad!

This year was a JOY!  My children were amazing!  My daughter was at the age where she could be independent and play on her own while I put her brother down for a nap.  My son LOVED exploring nature and had a blast studying plants and wandering around enjoying his freedom.  They visited friends at neighbouring campsites and I didn’t even have to worry as it was only 10 feet away!

Last year I felt so tied down, I couldn’t attend any workshops, go to any of the nightlife activity since I had to be at the tent with the kids, and my emotions were so raw from trying to juggle a baby and a cranky toddler.  I was thrilled with how different this year was.  Yes they are still children and have their moments, but it was great to see everyone playing nicely (for the most part!) together, both kids had friends their age there from some of my BFF’s so we had two 3-year-olds, 2 1.5-year-olds and other kids around those ages who popped in and out regularly to play.  That combined with the five adults to look after them and back each other up was great.

13872712_10155161292169478_4642200756022411313_nAlthough I still couldn’t make it to any workshops or nightlife this year, I didn’t mind as much, I still got to leave the site with the kids and check out the vendors, and the swimming, that is what gave me my freedom back.  Moms, have you heard of a PUDDLE JUMPER??  It is a LIFESAVER!  I used to have to hold my kids in the water, neither are big enough to swim on their own, then we discovered the puddle jumper, and my life has changed forever.

I always loved to swim, I was a fish and loved to be underwater all the time, with kids, you can’t really do that, I was really limited since I am always with my kids, and although I still loved swimming and went in the water, I mostly stayed at waist height playing with the kids.

13659164_10155161293509478_3227132755319959401_nFast forward back to the camping festival, with both kids in puddle jumpers, I got to SWIM!!  We swam out to the floating dock every day, my kids love to swim and I was thrilled they would go on an adventure with me to the floating dock.  In case you are panicking, there was at least one adult per kid and we were always close to the kids swimming, even in their pudde jumpers.  Once at the floating dock we all climbed on board, my daughter was content to sit on the dock and count for people jumping off, but my son (18 month old) LOVED to jump off the floating dock, sometimes into my arms sometimes nowhere near me.  It was amazing.  I loved to see my kids have so much fun and for me, I got a little freedom back this week.  It may not seem like much, but to someone who loves swimming (and doing anything really on yor own) once you have kids, you realize you have to give up stuff you never even considered before (like going swimming underwater with no child in your arms).  If there is a way to give you back some of your freedom easily, then go for it!

For me it was a simple puddle jumper (you can buy it at Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, Amazon, or we got one free from our local buy nothing group) that helped me get some freedom back.  Now my kids could swim WITH me instead of on me, so we were all comfortable going deeper and could do so safely.

Maybe next year I will make it to a workshop, maybe I will get to swim to the dock alone, maybe I can hit up a concert or fire pit and dancing or other night life, for now I am content to be near my kids and satisfied they are safe and happy, but when they are ready for more independence I cannot wait to get back some of mine!

What is one thing you didn’t expect you would have to give up when you became a parent.  Comment below!
