Review of Little Adventures

Dress Up Fun with Your Children - What magic dressing up brings. Learn lots of ways to incorporate Dress Up Fun with your Children into your Spring and Summer. I had the amazing chance to review some costumes from Little Adventures.  I was so excited.  The site had so many options on costumes to wear, even for adults.  I can tell you I was eyeing their adult cloaks pretty closely!  My four-year-old daughter immediately ran up behind me to help pick out a costume.  To no surprise she jumped on the fairy costumes, we settled on a cute pink one with a rainbow skirt.  She loved it!  She asked all the time when her costume would come in the mail so she could dress up!  My two-year-old son crawled into my lap and watched me debate which knight costumes to get him (I wanted to get a picture of my fairy and knight since that’s my blog’s name after all!) but as soon as he got a look at the dragon cloaks he made it clear he wanted to be a dragon.  So I got him the dragon cloak, if he wants it who am I to over-rule him!

My son loves his dragon cloak.  He is two-years-old so pretty much everything he does is adorable, but putting on that cloak and running around roaring like a dragon………. the height of adorable.  Particularly when wearing just a diaper and the cloak.  He loves roaring and having the cloak on just makes it way more fun. My daughter now calls him her pet dragon and he follows her around like a dog.  He also mysteriously has started asking to read lots of dragon stories and have me sing him dragon songs too (Puff the Magic Dragon).  I believe the cloak and his imaginary play inspire it a lot.

He has a hard time keeping the cloak on straight with all of his running around and spinning so we have to help him adjust a lot.  But, he adores costumes to dress up in.  He will be wearing this a few places for sure this Spring and Summer.

First thing, my daughter’s Rainbow Fairy Costume  comes with a tag saying machine washable, magic!  I have no time to hand wash so this is amazing news to a mom’s ears.  My daughter was on me from the time the package arrived to see her outfit.  She gasped and couldn’t wait to put on the dress.  I find the sizes fit small, or I got the wrong size, but it’s a little tight on her.  It’s like a body suit so she has trouble getting it on herself and has had at least one accident as she couldn’t get it off in time to go pee.  But once it’s on, she transforms into a beautiful fairy.  She has worn it each day this week, she absolutely LOVES it.  Wants to wear it to school, for walks, playing in the backyard, she would probably sleep in it if I let her.  The quality is amazing and I think it would really hold up to a four-year-old’s wear and tear.  I know this outfit will get a lot of wear for us.  She is already begging to wear it for Halloween, six and a half months away!

Verdict

I would definitely order from this site again.  The quality is just so good, and the prices aren’t bad.  Way better than a costume, it will last longer and hold up better. My mother is already asking if she should get them costumes of Little Adventures for their next birthdays.

Here are some of the things on my wish list that I hope to get eventually, with maybe a few items for me.

Bedtime Routine for a Toddler & Preschooler

I am a stay at home mom and my husband works a long hard job so by the end of the day we are both exhausted.   We don’t normally do bath time every day as there isn’t a lot of time and frankly we are just too tired.  Instead we focus more on family time for relaxing.  We have a fairly simple Bedtime Routine for a Toddler & Preschooler, which we try to stick to every night.

Bedtime Routine for a Toddler & Preschooler - Is it bedtime? Do you have a Bedtime Routine for a Toddler & Preschooler in your house? Try out this easy one if you are tired at the end of a long day.

Our Routine:

  • Brush teeth.
  • Put on pajama’s and night time overnight diapers (I choose Goodnites).
  • Snuggle on my bed and read stories together for 10-20 minutes together.
  • Tuck in babies and goodnight kisses.

This routine works for us.  We enjoy snuggles together as a family and encouraging reading.  Even though my son is only two, he loves to sit for stories and my daughter has been sitting still for stories for many years as well.

Night-time Diapers

I was approached by Influenster to test out the Goodnites diapers for free, and I jumped on it!  My daughter is almost four-years-old, and although she was fully day-time potty trained at two-years-old, she is still no where near ready for night-time potty training.  She was very excited to try these Goodnites in lieu of her normal pull-ups for bedtime.

Night-time Potty Training

Bee is a deep sleeper and just doesn’t wake up to pee, even if I try to wake her up, she has usually already gone so she needs nighttime stuff.  We have been using Pull-Ups for two years, and are very happy with them.  But they only go up to a size 5T, which is a little smaller than Bee’s normal clothes.  To be honest I didn’t even know there were bigger options.

Once I received these Goodnites and she tried them on, she was hooked.  They are a much better fit for a big preschooler.  She seems to be between sizes, the Pull-Ups are way to small, but the Goodnites are still big.  Which is good as she will have room to grow.  Who knew they had to go to Goodnites after Pull-Ups get too small? My only negative feedback on the Goodnites is they do not have the easy off sides. Pull-Ups my daughter can take off herself when she wakes up by ripping down the sides.  The Goodnites are more like undies and you need to remove them fully and that can be a pain.

Is your child too big for #pullups? It may be time to graduate to #Goodnites Click To Tweet

Is the end in sight soon?

I know she won’t be in nighttime diapers forever, but I cannot wait until we are no longer in diapers!  I have a toddler in diapers too so I am excited when the day comes that we are no longer in diapers.  But when we next to re-stock we will for sure be buying these Goodnites for her since they fit better.

Bedtime Routine for a Toddler & Preschooler - Is it bedtime? Do you have a Bedtime Routine for a Toddler & Preschooler in your house? Try out this easy one if you are tired at the end of a long day.

For those who have been through it, what are your tips to help the older child get potty trained?  I know limit liquids before bed, have them pee before bed, and before you go to bed, but anything else?

How do you know your child is ready for night-time potty training?

I received a package of Goodnights free to review from Influenster for the purpose of testing.

Family Movie Night

We started this new tradition of a Family Movie Night every week.  My son is almost two and my daughter three-and-a-half.  It is so much fun, we all snuggle up on the couch, put our phones away and watch a new movie together.

Family Movie Night - Do you celebrate Family Movie Night at your house? What makes it a success? Try these tips below to make any family movie night with your kids special.

Sometimes we put a little table in the living room and order in pizza or take-out food and enjoy dinner and a movie.  But more often (and to save my living room floor) we eat at the table then have a snack during movie time.

What makes a family movie night awesome?

Tasty Caramel & White Cheddar popcornThis week we had the chance to review Orville Redenbachers White Cheddar and Caramel popcorn for free from Influenster.  It was so much fun.  Neither of the kids had tried caramel popcorn before, and my son hadn’t really had much popcorn yet at all.  We all snuggled up to watch Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and munch on some popcorn while we watched the movie.  Although the caramel was by far my favourite, it does taste good in the same mouthful as a white cheddar, seriously, try them both in one bite, it’s tasty.   My kids polished off the whole bag with us, my son didn’t even watch the movie, just turned his chair towards the popcorn bowl to snack on it.

I forgot a lot from Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer from when I was a kid, they are MEAN to him!  Even Santa.  It is sad to watch with kids and my daughter is so sensitive she notices and wants to know why everyone is so mean to Rudolph.  She found the Abominable Snowman to be a little scary though.  But we all enjoyed the movie and popcorn and snuggles.  And the kids go to bed later so anything that delays bedtime is fine by them!

Family Movie Night - Do you celebrate Family Movie Night at your house? What makes it a success? Try these tips below to make any family movie night with your kids special.

What are your favourite movies to watch during family movie night?

What movie’s to watch?

We have done all the Land Before Times, almost all Disney movies, starting Ice Age, and are now focussing on Christmas movies.  It is my favourite night of the week when I can snuggle up on the couch and watch a movie with my family.  Sometimes I can even knit if both kids are snuggling with daddy.  Maybe I will finish my daughters hat before the end of winter.

There is something about watching classic Christmas movies that you grew up with, with your own children, by the light of the tree and keeping the magic of Christmas alive.  Next up, maybe Frosty the Snowman with some eggnog!

Other snack ideas:

  • Fresh popped popcorn
  • Chips
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Warm Milk
  • Cookies
  • Nuts
  • Oranges
  • Pretzels
  • Anything that is a special treat and fun to eat!  Bonus if it isn’t too messy so your floors don’t suffer.

Kidloland App Review for toddlers and preschoolers

Kidloland App Review - A review of Kidloland App, a nursery school rhyming app for toddlers and preschoolers. Perfect to keep the kids busy guilt-free while learning.

I was approached by this company to try out their new app on my Android phone (but apparently they have iPhone apps too) and I jumped at the chance.  My three-year-old daughter is obsessed with phones and apps, when she was younger I used them to keep her busy so I could get a few extra minutes of sleep (don’t judge, I barely get any sleep to begin with!).  Now that she is older, I need apps that are more age appropriate so she is actually learning while she is playing on my phone.

My 18-month-old son is also learning the appeal of phones.  He knows how to steal it, open it and try to hit apps.  He doesn’t exactly know what he is doing though.

Both of my kids love nursery rhymes, Mother Goose Club is a favourite show, so I liked the idea of an app filled with nursery rhymes to help them learn and keep them busy.  I am not necessarily an advocate of using technology with kids, but I believe there is a time and a place to use them.  Trying to keep them quiet and occupied in the doctors office is one way (when we go its for a triple back to back appointment session and we are there for 2-3 hours) that I believe apps can be super useful.  On car rides to keep one quiet while the other is sleeping or try to keep them awake in the car so they don’t fall asleep, to get some sleep in the morning, and distract them while I am cutting their nails, there are tons of reasons technology can be a lifesaver with kids and using an educational app makes me feel better about it.

This app has tons of cute activities for kids to use to learn, nursery rhymes, alphabet, shapes, vehicles, animals, birds, insects, letters, fruits, veggies, animal sounds, lullabies and activities with cute little songs to go with them and teach the kids about them.  My daughter can maneuver around the app easily and choose which songs and activities she wants, my son loves to just watch it like a tv, so I can put it on and hand it to him and he will just sit there and hold the phone and watch the nursery rhymes.  I love how each child can use the app in age-appropriate ways to learn, and stay busy so I can get stuff done I might not be able to otherwise.

My daughter now uses any excuse to ask for “special time on mommy’s phone” and even asks if she can use her Kidloland app.

What I liked about this app is how much you can get on the one app.  My daughter can learn and explore so many different sections and get a lot of variety.  I cannot have a million apps on my phone, and frankly I don’t want a bunch of kid apps on my phone, so I like the idea that with the one app they will be able to play with a variety of topics while enjoying songs.

ahoy yee Mateys! Our Adventures on the Pirate Adventure Theater Cruise

ahoy yee Mateys! Come set sail with Pirate Adventures and take your family on a swashbuckling adventure! Perfect activity to keep kids busy on a summer day

Are you looking for an adventure?  Trying to keep the kids busy and entertained this summer? Living in or visiting the Ottawa area?  Then you NEED to go on a pirate cruise with Pirate Adventures!!  It is super easy to get to, has parking available, and easy to find on arrival.  Staff was friendly and in character the whole time.

pirate cruise - 1

We started off with turning into pirates ourselves.  We had a pirate wench giving us name tags with pirate names on it, Seawitch Stephanie, Mermaid Maeve, Nasty Nate, Singing Sarah, were all among the new pirate names given.  All super fun and helped to add to the pirate spirit.  Then there was another pirate outfitting everyone, it is AMAZING how a sash and vest can transform any outfit into a pirate outfit.  There was a third pirate in charge of face painting who was drawing beards or mustash’s on the kids (and any enthusiastic adults).

Next we boarded the ship and got ready for our adventure!  I went with my two kids (3-years-old and 19-months-old) plus my awesome sister, Steph.  We sat right up front with the kids and got to be part of the story at the beginning introducing everyone to the adventure and why we were on the boat.

pirate cruise - 2

They staff/actors are AMAZING at their jobs, they do not break character at all, are so enthusiastic, and great at drawing in the kids and participants.  They really get the crowd involved with lots of helpers and volunteers.  I love how they made a mission for the cruise, we were looking for clues, had a water battle and got boarded by a pirate, which then was the scene for a great pirate battle.

Another awesome thing about the cruise is the the staff were all super nursing friendly.  My son decided he was tired and cranky on the cruise so we were able to sit in the shade at the back of the boat and nurse for a lot of the boat ride.  I was still able to see and my son was happy with his snuggles.  *** Note to nursing moms, maybe wash off baby’s mustache BEFORE nursing, I got covered in black face paint, but Po was happy and that was the most important part right? ***

ahoy yee Mateys! 3My daughter LOVED being able to use the cannons moanted on the boat (attached to a hose) to shoot water at the pirate, she said that was her favourite part. They even found some treasure in the water!  My daughter had a blast going through the treasure and choosing some booty.  She chose some “gems” and she and Auntie Stephie picked out some pirate coins for Po.

Some tips for when you go on YOUR pirate adventure:

  • If you have pirate gear dress up!  It makes it more fun, they have some pieces there to help though so don’t worry if your costume is lacking a little pirate-feel.
  • Get the kids a foam sword at Dollarama, it’s more fun to play along!
  • Bring hats and water, the boat is mostly out in the open and it can get hot.
  • When the time comes to shoot down your pirate foe with the cannons, get your kids to a cannon asap so they can shoot some water and have fun (that was my daughter’s favourite part).
  • If your kids get antsy take them to visit the captain, there is even a little mini wheel at the back so they can practice steering the ship too.

ahoy yee Mateys! Come set sail with Pirate Adventures and take your family on a swashbuckling adventure! Perfect activity to keep kids busy on a summer day

I recommend this cruise to any families in Ottawa with kids and anyone visiting Ottawa.  It’s a great hour of fun, cheap parking, and a perfect location to bring a picnic lunch and get the kids playing outside on a nice day.  My son was definitely too young to be the target age (he is only 19 months) but my 3-year-old had a blast and was at the right age to start understanding and get involved.  The 6-11 year olds looked to be having the most fun!

Monthly Letter’s from Santa Review

Monthly Letters from Santa Review - Want a cute idea to keep the magic of Santa alive all year long? Try these interactive letter's from Santa every month from #12lettersfromsanta

I was approached by 12lettersfromsanta with a super unique idea.  They have a business sending out monthly letters to kids from Santa, all related to the actual month.

9937670d-12lfs-products-april_0g408l0g408l000000

I got to try it out with my kids in April and it was really fun.  My daughter got her letter in the mail first and was thrilled to get a letter from Santa.  She carried her letter proudly home from the mailbox and could not wait to sit down and read it with me.

The letter talked all about Mr. and Mrs. Clause’s plans for the garden and what veggies they were going to grow.  The letter came with an interactive activitiy, a paper with a pretend garden in it and a bunch of vegetable stickers.  The purpose being my daughter was supposed to “plant” a veggie garden with her favourite veggies to help let Santa know which veggies kids like best.

She had a lot of fun, and being a three-year-old loved putting all the stickers on.  She loved how Santa sent her a personalized letter.

#Santa is watching all year long! Click To Tweet

My son, 16-months-old, got his letter the next day.  I picked different fonts/layouts for the letter so they did look different, but they were the exact same letter.  I read it when my daughter was not around, but she would have been confused to know that her brother got the same letter (word for word) as her just with his name on it and a different paper.  He loves books and being read to so enjoyed having a story read to him and helping to open up the envelope.

I loved the letters and thought they were super cute.  My three-year-old would love to get a letter in the mail from Santa each month and is totally the right age for this activity.  My son is not the right age (not that I thought he would be, I just wanted to try them both out and he wants to be included).  My only issue was if you have two kids that get the exact same letter then it could ruin the magic a bit as my daughter would figure it out.  I think there needs to be a way to ensure that there are different letters sent to the same children in a certain household otherwise the kids may clue in to the fact that it’s not really “Santa” sending it to them, or that someone other than Santa, meaning he may not be real, is sending them the letters.  They have the option to write the Santa letter yourself, so perhaps if you have multiple children you would need to write them all yourself to ensure they all get different letters.

If you have one child, especially over three-years-old this is a cute activity they are sure to love.  I know my daughter would be thrilled to get more letters from Santa.  She has had two Christmas’s understanding Santa so is very much affected by the magic surrounding Santa.

This is a really fun way to get mail for your child each month and keep the magic of Santa going all year round.  You should check them out at this link to see if this is something your kids would enjoy doing each month too.

Product Review – Six Pack Fitness Camille Bag

Six Pack Fitness - If you are on the go a lot, visiting the gym, picnics, errands, this is an amazing bag for your family to make eating healthy easier.

I was so excited when I was approached by Six Pack Fitness to review one of their bags. After browsing their website I had such a hard time trying to pick out a bag because there are so many amazing ones.  I watched a couple of YouTube videos to try and decide which ones would be best for my kids and from their recommendation, I decide to try the Camille bag because I could also use it like a diaper bag.

six pack fitness - box
As a mom with a three-year-old and a 15-month-old staying healthy is very important to me but not necessarily something you have a lot of time for.  Although these bags are marketed for going to the gym,  they would also be very practical for road trips, families on the go, and even to be used as a diaper bag.  There are so many pockets in this bag,  in the inside there is at least six pockets which you can use to help store protein powder and supplements if you’re going to the gym, your energy bars, water bottles, etc.  For me it would be used to hold extra diapers, wipes, snacks, probably lip gloss and a few extra hair ties, it is also big enough for a laptop, which is amazing when we’re travelling. I frequently have my bag with me in the front of the car and it would have everything I need in the bag.  Everyone’s  drinks, some extra fruit and snacks and my laptop, diapers, wipes, and books.

six pack fitness - contents
Onto the  coolest feature of this bag and I’m assuming the top reason why they actually sell these bags because every bag features these.  The bag comes with a super cool compartment which is insulated like it’s a little cooler bag inside of the larger bag.  It comes with shelves and it’s own containers that you could use to pack lunches or small meals in.  The Camille bag comes with four, which is perfect as we are a family of four, so on a road trip we could easily put in the ice packs (it comes with three) and then pack that in the containers with all of our lunches to have as we are driving on the road.  I love how easy it makes travelling with a family of four or family of any number with healthy meals to be able to grab on the go.

six pack fitness - features

You could use this for picnics, trips, running errands, or if you’re going anywhere with lunch or anything that would require you to keep a few meals cold at the same time as toting around other things to.

six pack fitness - for picnic

My only issue with the bag is there is nowhere cold to put my water bottle!  I am obsessed with COLD water, I wish there was a spot to put your water to get cold too, but honestly that’s the only thing I wish this bag had that it doesn’t.

I am so excited to try and be organized and eat healthy while on the go.  I am planning events now around where I can use my bag and bring healthy meals and snacks with me.

Please check out these awesome bags from Six Pack Fitness, if you are into healthy meals, fitness, or just easy ways to pack healthy stuff on the go you need to look at these bags!

Panty by Post Review

Panty by Post Review - A review of Panty by Post, a pretty panty delivered to your mailbox monthly.

I heard about this company, Panty by Post, in the fall and was super excited to try it out.  I had heard of monthly subscription boxes before but never received one.  I decided to try this one out after getting some money for my birthday.

Why underwear you may ask?  Well I do not have a lot of shopping time and I rarely get myself something nice.  I loved the idea of a new pair of underwear showing up at my door each month.  Something nice and kind of fancy that I would never get for myself otherwise.

2016-04-18 13.56.44I get so excited now around the second week of the month and check my mail box constantly. Even my three year old recognizes the red envelope now and says “yay mommy your new undies” when she sees it.

There are three different styles, Everyday Basics, Signature Lines, and Premium Luxe.

I started with the signature collection which is a mix between basic and premium.    I got that for a long time and liked the underwear quite a bit, but I switched to the basic last month and LOVE it.  I think I just like comfort best.  This month they also sent me the premium panty to review as well and compare.  There’s a picture on the side of the three different types to compare.

I find them all so comfy and fun to wear. It’s awesome wearing something nice and knowing that once a month I will get a special surprise in the mail.

This makes a great gift for a new mom to feel nice again post baby, mother’s day gift, Valentine’s day gift, or even wedding gift for the happy couple to enjoy some special time together!

If you were to subscribe which type do you think you would want?  Basic, signature, or premium?  How often do you get a new pair on underwear?  Comment below. Need a fancy gift for the special women in your life? Try #pantybypost! Click To Tweet

There is not much of a scent, which is nice as I remember the old Head and Shoulders shampoo had a strong scent, which I did not like.

The texture was nice and it felt good in my hair.  My only problem was that it made my hair really knotted.  I always use conditioner, but even with conditioner my hair was a big rats nest and I had a rough time unknotting it.  Yes, I have long thick hair, but that’s not always the case with other shampoos.

I liked how it kept my hair fresh and not greasy the next day, as a mom with young children showering daily is a luxury I do not usually have.  My hair was not greasy and nasty the next day though so I was happy with the longer effects of the shampoo.  Even two days later it was still presentable and not greasy.

I do not have an issue with dandruff, so I cannot speak to the effects it may have on dandruff, I sometimes get an itchy scalp in winter with dry skin so I enjoyed the moisturizing effects.

I think my husband would like this shampoo, but it’s not one I would buy.  For the sole reason of how knotted my hair was after using it.  I hate knotted hair and combing it out!  I guess I do need a hair cut but still, until I do using a product that does not help my knots is not the best product for me.

Children’s Book Review – The Pirate Train

product_thumbnail

One of my favourite parts about being a blogger is getting the chance to read and try so many products I may not have otherwise got the chance to see.  My daughter an I adore reading all these new books and are lucky enough to review at least one new book a week. This week we are thrilled to be able to read The Pirate Train by Nicole Plyler Fisk.

Children's Book Review - The Pirate Train - Are you looking for a cute pirate book for your kids? Does your child love trains and adventure? You need to try out The Pirate Train! An adorable family adventure book.

This book is absolutely adorable, my daughter really really loved it.  The story is about a family of pirates who enjoy living on the open sea until the younger brother gets seasick and they have to move on land.  They decide to buy a  train and live on the train instead, hence the title, Pirate Train.   We had a lot of fun reading the book.  I think the story is super cute and the idea of a pirate train is really cool.  I actually want to live on a train!  Even better if it was a pirate train.

I hope there are more books in the series following the Pirate Train and their family because it is such a great concept and a lot of possibilities for stories in my opinion.

A pirate life is the life for me! On the open sea or in a #piratetrain! @yohomatey Click To Tweet

I asked the author, Nicole, if she could answer a few questions for me so we could get to know her and her stories better:

What made you decide to start writing Children’s Stories?
I loved children’s stories growing up, and I’ve remained drawn to them. When I was in high school, I was in a summer creative writing course sponsored by The Governor’s School, and I didn’t really find my groove until I started writing poems inspired by fairy-tales … my own retellings of classic stories. Then, I took a break to do “grown up” writing in the form of a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. thesis — until I graduated and had kids and found myself immersed, again, in children’s lit.
How many have you written?
I’ve written three: the first, Arina Speaks, was a fundraising project for my adopted daughter. We wanted to take her back to Kazakhstan, her home country, to meet her birth family. The book, illustrated by a friend, was a simple project … a compilation of fun conversations we’ve had. We raised enough money for her plane ticket and made that trip in 2013. The second is The Pirate Train, which I wrote with my six-year-old son, because he wanted a book too. The third, The Booktender’s Garden, is another fundraising project for my favorite children’s bookstore in the world: Ellen Mager’s The Booktenders’ Secret Garden in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
What gave you the idea for the Pirate Train?
The Pirate Train is inspired by my son’s two true loves: pirates and trains. We had never seen a book that combined the two, so we decided to write our own.
Who is your favourite character?
I’m partial to Pirate Mom, for obvious reasons. I identify with her on both the mom-level and on the dog-rescuer-level. I started fostering dogs in 2011 and just sent my eightieth foster to a wonderful rescue up north.
Most importantly, are there more coming?!
Yes! We’ve planned seven pirate train books, and have written four. The Pirate Train: Gem Mountain is scheduled to be released at the end of this year, if not before.

Thank you so much to Nicole for sending us a sample of this book, both of my kids love it and enjoy reading it, which means it has bought me some time during our “family reading time” to read my own book, which is greatly appreciated.
