Recipe for the Perfect Stocking

Recipe for the Perfect Stocking - Do you know how to make the perfect stocking? How to fill it with items they will enjoy and love?

Growing up my mom always made the most amazing stockings.  She had a great way of stuffing stockings.  Practical items, fun items, useful items. One of the key things is to ensure there is a variety in the stocking.  Think of their interests and hobbies and try to tick off a few categories.

Recipe for the Perfect Stocking - Do you know how to make the perfect stocking? How to fill it with items they will enjoy and love?

Here is my Recipe for the Perfect Stocking:

Edible Goodies:  Find out what they enjoy!  Candy canes, chocolate kisses, shortbread, life saver books, find out their holiday favourites.  My hubby likes Terry’s Chocolate Orange, my mom likes Toffifee, Turtles, and Maltesers, my sister likes Kinder Surprise.   I like traditional Walkers Shortbread cookies and maybe a Flake from the Scottish specialty store in town.

Hobby related items – Nose plugs, Magick cards, paint brushes, etc.

Knitting and Crochet : Knitting needles/crochet hook, wool, stitch markers, knitting needle gauge, needles, etc.

Handy People: Tools, screw driver heads, duct tape, head lamp.

Camping: Tent stakes, lighters, fire starters, flash lights, mosquito repelling tools, kitchen gadgets.

Planners/journaling: Sharpie markers and fancy pens, planner stickers, washi tape.

Geeky/Nerd Toys: POP figurines, magnets of their favourite show, socks, mugs.

Kids Toys: Crayons, hot wheels cars, doll accessories, add-on kits for their toys, puzzles, balls, stickers.

Bath stuff: For kids or adults.  Fun sample sizes shower gel, bubble bath, colour bath tabs, bath bombs, coloured bath pencils, bath pillow or bath toys.

Hair Accessories:  Hair ties, hair bows, barrettes, head bands, hair bands, cute fun things.

Cosmetics: Lip gloss, even boys like lip gloss!  Hand lotion, eye liner, lip stick, eye shadow, foundation, etc.

One of the most important things is the presentation.  A magazine based on their interests, a colouring book sticking out the top of the stocking.  Let it look overflowing.

Holiday Gift Guide for Mom

Moms all work very hard and deserve a little extra love from time to time.  Christmas is the best time of year to give that!

There are tons of great gifts you can get the mom in your life (your mom, the mother of your children, mother-in-law, friend who is a mother, sister, etc.) to help her out and show her how much you appreciate all her hard work.

A break!!

Holiday Gift Guide for MOM - Mom is so awesome and deserves some amazing gifts this Christmas. Why not follow this Holiday Gift Guide for Mom and get her what she REALLY wants?!?!

Mama loves her kids, but probably never gets to do anything alone (including pee) so why not tell mom you will watch the kids for a few hours and she is to go out and relax, drink a HOT coffee at Starbucks and *gasp* read a book!  Go shopping, visit a friend, not run errands, do something fun and relaxing for herself.

Gift cards for Meals

GC

Give Mom gift cards to local restaurants and fast food places.  What better than the gift of not having to cook dinner one night.

Fancy coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc.

CoffeeWhatever she loves, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, bonus if you tailor it to her Tassimo/Kurig maker (provided you know what they have).  Mama needs coffee to parent!

Chocolate

chocolate-candies-1329480Nice chocolate she wouldn’t buy herself, boxed chocolate, truffles, whatever.  Encourage her to hide it somewhere for a treat when she is alone.

Adult colouring book

61+OsGRPVAL__SX384_BO1,204,203,200_Colouring is a great way to de-stress after a day of dealing with cranky toddlers and teething babies, my toddler and I both have fairy colouring books (mine adult and hers toddler) so we can sit and colour together in our separate books.  It is a great way to spend time together and relax.IMG_5072

A gift card (plus baby sitting coupon) to a local Paint Nite

A night away from the kids with Adults painting and drinking wine.  Great way for mom to have a good time and feel like a human being again.

Subscription to Audible

Who has time to sit and read a book?  With audio books you can read while you drive, cook dinner, breast feed, clean, etc.  I love it, I can listen to them all the time and still catch up on my author’s latest books.

Subscription boxes

box-women@2xThe gift that keeps giving.  A monthly subscription box that comes each month so mom can eagerly anticipate the mail and get a treat each month.  I just got one and am so excited by it!  I have Panty By Post 526and each month I get a new pair of underwear.  I want to try Birchbox, which is makeup and beauty products.  Mom is always so busy looking after everyone else she forgets to look after herself.  Here is a nice way to pamper her every month.

A Photo Shoot

1922481_771027246248550_1444057306_nFor the family, you can never have enough family photos, maybe just her and the kids, you and her? Maybe treat her to a pampering session (hair & makeup) and a professional photo shoot on her own to remind her how beautiful she is?

Stuffed Squash

Author:
Recipe type: Vegetarian
Cuisine: Holiday
Ingredients
  • Acorn Squash
  • 3 Cloves
  • 2-3 Shallots
  • Olive oil
  • 1 Apple
  • 1-2 stalks of Celery
  • Pecans (a few tbsp, I grind in a mortar & pestle but you can chop)
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • Sprinkle of Sage
  • Fancy cheese (swiss, Havarti, whatever you have on hand)
Instructions
  1. Cut an acorn squash in half. Cook in oven for an hour until squash is cooked. Let cool a bit before handling so you don't burn yourself.
  2. While squash is cooking cut up and sauté your garlic and shallots in some olive oil until translucent. Add in chopped peeled Apple and finely chopped celery and sauté a bit more until soft. Add in pecans.
  3. Scoop out inards, leaving ½-1 inch still intact to maintain the shape of the shell.
  4. Mix squash with stuffing. Add spices. Scoop filling back into squash.
  5. cut cheese and add on top of stuffed squash

I love squash and stuffing, so combing them is a win-win!  I have had this as a snack, a meal-side, and it is delicious and can be adapted for any occasion. I hope you like this!

Holiday Gift Guide for Dad

Dad works hard to provide for the family, why not get him some fun gifts to thank him for all his hard work.

Stumped on what to get Dad? Try getting hubby some of these fun gifts. Click To Tweet

Holiday Gift Guide for DAD - Dad's can be hard to shop for, here is a Holiday Gift Guide for Dad, husband, father, men, whomever, if he is a guy you can't go wrong with these ideas!

SAXX Boxers

sxbb30f_ghe
I cannot recommend these highly enough.  The women in my birth group introduced me to this and I think everyone’s husbands now proudly sport them.  Sorry in advance for the visual, but there is a separate pocket for certain appendages, meaning it has more space and is super comfy and gets less hot and sweaty.  Once you get SAXX they become a recurrent gift.  Both my hubby and dad have SAXX!

Nothing like a pair of SAXX to show hubby you care about his comfort! Click To Tweet

cq5dam_web_1280_1280Scotch

A good scotch can really help for de-stressing after a long day of hard work.  Good quality scotch, like McAllen 18 and Lagavulin 16.  Or my personal favourite, Arran Gold (seriously if someone can get that to me in Canada please tell me how!).  Nice stuff they wouldn’t buy themselves and gives a nice treat.  Bonus points for the scotch glasses and scotch rocks to go with them.

41kIPS-NXRL__SX180_Knives/swords

Pocket knives, kitchen knives, katana, sword, fun knives, any guy would love to have some new toys around. Mine is a prepper and any weapons are greatly appreciated.  Even just survival blades can come in handy.  Fancy Chefs knives are also a great idea for the guy who loves to cook.  Why not a sharpener to help keep them at their best?

1390_browncoats_serenity_valleyDorky clothes

T-shirts, robes, toques, PJ’s, all in their favourite characters: Big Bang theory, Firefly, Star Wars, super heroes, Game of Thrones, Star Trek etc.  you can’t go wrong with some new apparel in their favourite genre.

Chili_mango_hot_sauce__07168_1335959425_240_240Hot sauce

The ability to spice up food and make it more flavourful (like ketchup), go for the hot sauces that boast flavour, not the burn your mouth off ones.  While those can be fun too, the tasty ones like scotch bonnet or mango habanero are much tastier.  This one is my dad’s favourite hot sauce, he discovered it on a trip across Canada and when I buy it I get it in bulk so I have gifts that last awhile.

 Gadgets  The Latest High-Tech Gadgets

A new gaming mouse, Play Station 4, new Xbox game, tablet, the latest WOW expansion, whatever their tastes,  I am sure there is a new game or gaming accessory for them!

Exercise accessoriesAccessories for their sport

If they are a cyclist some tools to fix their bike, runner a new watch to track how fast they run/heart rate, etc., kayaker a new spray skirt, ultimate player a new disc or bag to keep their disc’s in, there are tons of dvd’s, magazines, and books related to sports that may peak their interest too.

Buy them a tool to help fix up whatever you (or the kids) have broken recently. Tool chest, tool organizer, new gadgets to add to their collection, according to my hubby you can never have enough tools.

Gift CardsGift Cards

Gift cards for places to treat themselves to a guilt-free lunch at work.  My hubby loves Subway and there is one by his work, so a gift card to go there at lunch is a great gift.  It also means you don’t have to make his lunch one day!

Edible Treats

81Vp3T6q4oL__SX466_Big chocolate bars, like the 1/2 lb peanut butter cups, you don’t want to know how quickly my husband demolished his last Christmas!  Fudge, cookies, Terry’s chocolate orange, all these are awesome treats for him to snack on Christmas morning.

Guys are so difficult to buy for!  Hopefully with these tips you can find something here that your husband will like.

NOTE:  This is more of a general “dad” Holiday Gift Guide, I use it for both my husband, the father of my children, and my dad too!

If you have any more suggestions please tell me in the comments below. I am always looking for more ideas!  What are your go-to’s for a gift for your husband?

DIY Christmas Wrapping Paper from Recycled Paper

12191008_10153812570078755_1979414774298070174_n

This is a great craft to have your toddler help with.  It can be adapted for any occasion easily.  My daughter loves to paint and is already so excited about Christmas, she loved being able to “help” wrap Christmas presents with her paintings.

Try this super easy way to get your toddler involved in wrapping Christmas presents. Click To Tweet

DIY Christmas -Wrapping Paper - Try out this super easy craft to get your toddler involved in wrapping Christmas presents. A great way to dress up a present. #12daysofchristmas link-up

Supplies needed:

  • Scrap paper (I used the craft paper Bee brings home from nursery school with her “pictures” on and flipped it over to use for this.  I can’t bear to throw them out yet, it’s my baby’s creation!  But they are taking over the house so this is a great way to re-use them)
  • Christmas-themed cookie cutters
  • Paint
  • Container lid

Method:

IMG_5007I got Bee to pick the cookie cutter she wanted to use and pick the colour paint. I put the paint in the lid of a container and had her dip the cookie cutter in the paint then go-at-it stamping the paper.  I didn’t care about splotches, uniformity or anything, I just let her have fun.  I did it with her (have two cookie cutters, toddler will NOT want to share!) and IMG_4999tried to fill in the white space as best as I could.  My objective was to create a fun project for us and something cute the grandparents would laugh at when they go to open their presents.

They are by no means beautiful, but my toddler made them and was really excited to help make stuff for christmas, I call it mission successful!
