Pumpkin Books & Activities for September’s Monthly Crafting Book Club

This month our focus is on Pumpkin Books & Activities for September’s Monthly Crafting Book Club.  If you have not heard of the Monthly Crafting Book Club we focus on a new book, series, or topic each month to do a craft on.  It’s a lot of fun and a great way to further your children’s love of reading by incorporating a craft along with a book.   I used to love the Berenstain Bears Prize Pumpkin book growing up by Stan & Jan Berenstain.  Since we are celebrating all things Fall this week for the Autumn Equinox, otherwise known as Mabon, this is the perfect time for a pumpkin craft.

We had a big family Harvest Feast yesterday and decided to make some pumpkin name cards to help everyone find their seats at the table.  Plus it gave a little decoration to the festivities.  It was my first time hosting a big holiday dinner and I loved this extra touch that showed everyone to their seats without the awkward “where shall I sit” while everyone hovers around the table.

Come join us for the Monthly Crafting Book Club. Each month we focus on a different book and encourage early literacy by pairing it with a craft.

  • I folded a piece of orange construction paper into quarters.
  • Trace or free hand draw an orange onto the paper.
  • Use your scissors to cut it out.
  • Fold the pumpkin in half and cut little slits along the folded edge, being careful to leave a few centimeters at the edge.
  • Use the scissors to cut narrow yellow strips.
  • Time for your children to help!  Get them to help weave them in and out of the orange strips .
  • Use as many yellow strips as possible, the more strips, the prettier the pumpkin, and nicer the weaving.
  • Glue down the edges with the glue stick.
  • Cut the pipe cleaner into pieces about an inch and a half long.
  • Poke the end of the pipe cleaner through the top of the pumpkin and fold it up a bit on the backside to stay put.
  • OPTIONAL:  Write everyone’s names on the pumpkin to show them where to sit.

  • To use as place cards stick the finished pumpkin on the plates of those dining with you.  Or weave it in between the tines of the forks.
