Monthly Crafting Book Club for September – Happy Pumpkin Day Mouse

Happy Pumpkin Day Mouse - Happy Pumpkin Day Mouse is a FANTASTIC book for little kids. Come see what easy crafts the Monthly Crafting Book Club has created for September's book!

This book has been a favourite of my family for two years now.  Toddlers just LOVE It’s Pumpkin Day Mouse by Laura Numeroff, same series as if You Take A Mouse To School series.  Between the counting, learning facial features, and pumpkin fun my kids squeal with excitement over this book and make me read it over and over again.  Now that my son is almost two (not till Christmas) he adores this book and yells “eek” and “boo” over and over again.

It’s Pumpkin Day Mouse is the book of the month in the Monthly Crafting Book Club for September.  I formed a group of bloggers after Christmas last year who would be interested in participating in a monthly blog series where we all do a craft or activity based on the same book.  It’s been a great success and I have loved to see what everyone comes up with.  If you think you might be interested in joining us join our Facebook Group HERE and check out the upcoming books to see if you would be interested in joining us.  You are not obligated to participate every month and can pick and choose which ones you want to participate in.

Check out our past month’s crafts below:

January – Barnyard Dance

February – If You Give A Moose A Muffin

March – ABC’s

April – Piggy in the Puddle

May – Five Little Monkeys

June – A Camping-related book

August – A Back to School-related book

This month I choose to do pumpkin faces with my kids, a great way to recognize emotion and teach my son matching.

Materials Needed

  • Orange Paint
  • Empty Egg Carton
  • Sharp knife, paint brushes, etc.
  • Markers
  • It’s Pumpkin Day Mouse Book by Laura Numeroff

Instructions

  • Use a knife to cut apart the egg carton.  I find a knife is easier than scissors, but whatever floats you boat.
  • Next I had my kids paint the egg cartons orange.
  • I let them dry overnight (or maybe two until we had time to come back to it).
  • I took the book and copied the faces of the pumpkins onto our egg carton pumpkins.
  • I gave the kids each a marker and the extra egg shell pumpkins and had them decorate as well.

Put It All Together

We grabbed the book and the egg carton pumpkins and laid them out on the floor so we could see all the faces.  As we read the book we picked out the pumpkin that matched the emotional pumpkin on the page, usually imitating it ourselves.  “This pumpkin is sad”, we all made sad faces and found the sad pumpkin. We did this for the whole book until we matched all the pumpkin faces to the right page.

And repeat!

The kids loved doing this, it was super easy, they got to get messy (always a favourite), and read a book together which is also fun.  By incorporating a the book with a craft it encourages them to read more, they are more likely to remember it with the craft, and it prolongs the story and makes It more enjoyable for them.  We love reading in this house and I want to foster that love and make it as interactive as possible to further their interest in reading.
