The Hungry Caterpillar: Craft & Counting Activity

The Hungry Caterpillar - Practice fine motor skills, colour recognition & counting in this fun The Hungry Caterpillar: Craft & Counting Activity for the #MonthlyCraftingBookClub

This month for the Monthly Crafting Book Club we are focusing on The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  I always love pairing fun activities with a book to help encourage my kids love of reading.  We love focusing on a new book each month and doing something fun with it then reading the book together.  This month we did The Hungry Caterpillar: Craft & Counting Activity, a combination of a fun craft, and a learning activity to do along with the book.

How to Put it Together:

Part 1:

The Hungry Caterpillar - Practice fine motor skills, colour recognition & counting in this fun The Hungry Caterpillar: Craft & Counting Activity for the #MonthlyCraftingBookClub

  • Cut the egg carton in half before you wrangle the kids.
  • Give each child a tray of green paint and let them go nuts painting the inside and outside of their egg carton green.
  • Help them (or instruct depending on the age) to paint the first cup in and out red.
  • Let dry.
  • Poke holes in the red cup for antenna, cut a piece of pipe cleaner and fold in half.  Put it through the antenna holes.
  • Optional: Write the days of the week on each egg carton.

Part 2:

The Hungry Caterpillar - Practice fine motor skills, colour recognition & counting in this fun The Hungry Caterpillar: Craft & Counting Activity for the #MonthlyCraftingBookClub

  • Collect some pom poms and The Hungry Caterpillar book.
  • As you read the book with them have them drop a pom pom in each container to correspond with the right food. You will need to double up on one day!

I enlisted my mother’s help to read the book while I helped the kids count their pom poms and put them in the egg cups.  My four-year-old did amazing at it.  She had no issues doing it and even colour coordinated the pom poms to match the food colour.  My two-year-old just had fun putting pom poms in egg cups.  Either way we enjoyed the story, craft, and activity.

Review of Little Adventures

Dress Up Fun with Your Children - What magic dressing up brings. Learn lots of ways to incorporate Dress Up Fun with your Children into your Spring and Summer. I had the amazing chance to review some costumes from Little Adventures.  I was so excited.  The site had so many options on costumes to wear, even for adults.  I can tell you I was eyeing their adult cloaks pretty closely!  My four-year-old daughter immediately ran up behind me to help pick out a costume.  To no surprise she jumped on the fairy costumes, we settled on a cute pink one with a rainbow skirt.  She loved it!  She asked all the time when her costume would come in the mail so she could dress up!  My two-year-old son crawled into my lap and watched me debate which knight costumes to get him (I wanted to get a picture of my fairy and knight since that’s my blog’s name after all!) but as soon as he got a look at the dragon cloaks he made it clear he wanted to be a dragon.  So I got him the dragon cloak, if he wants it who am I to over-rule him!

My son loves his dragon cloak.  He is two-years-old so pretty much everything he does is adorable, but putting on that cloak and running around roaring like a dragon………. the height of adorable.  Particularly when wearing just a diaper and the cloak.  He loves roaring and having the cloak on just makes it way more fun. My daughter now calls him her pet dragon and he follows her around like a dog.  He also mysteriously has started asking to read lots of dragon stories and have me sing him dragon songs too (Puff the Magic Dragon).  I believe the cloak and his imaginary play inspire it a lot.

He has a hard time keeping the cloak on straight with all of his running around and spinning so we have to help him adjust a lot.  But, he adores costumes to dress up in.  He will be wearing this a few places for sure this Spring and Summer.

Fairy Costume

First thing, my daughter’s Rainbow Fairy Costume  comes with a tag saying machine washable, magic!  I have no time to hand wash so this is amazing news to a mom’s ears.  My daughter was on me from the time the package arrived to see her outfit.  She gasped and couldn’t wait to put on the dress.  I find the sizes fit small, or I got the wrong size, but it’s a little tight on her.  It’s like a body suit so she has trouble getting it on herself and has had at least one accident as she couldn’t get it off in time to go pee.  But once it’s on, she transforms into a beautiful fairy.  She has worn it each day this week, she absolutely LOVES it.  Wants to wear it to school, for walks, playing in the backyard, she would probably sleep in it if I let her.  The quality is amazing and I think it would really hold up to a four-year-old’s wear and tear.  I know this outfit will get a lot of wear for us.  She is already begging to wear it for Halloween, six and a half months away!

Verdict

I would definitely order from this site again.  The quality is just so good, and the prices aren’t bad.  Way better than a costume, it will last longer and hold up better. My mother is already asking if she should get them costumes of Little Adventures for their next birthdays.

Here are some of the things on my wish list that I hope to get eventually, with maybe a few items for me.

5 Games to play on a Breakfast Date with Young Children

5 Games to play on a Breakfast Date - Are you too tired to have an evening date? You need 4 Games to play on a Breakfast Date with Young Children, date in the morning while the kids play.

How many of you are parents to young children?  People who are super busy? Maybe don’t work the same shifts very often.  Well here are 5 Games to play on a Breakfast Date with Young Children, easy dates to do at home in the morning over coffee to spend some quality time together, while still minding children.

I used to have a monthly series on my blog called the Date Night Challenge, all date ideas you can do at home once the kids are in bed.  The idea was sometimes parents don’t have a chance to get out of the house very often, but you should still have a chance to connect.  Doing dates once the kids are in bed is a great way to still have a chance to see each other and still get quality time.  Well ironically enough, I had to stop doing that series because frankly we were too tired at the end of the day.  Movie date nights are pretty much the norm in this house and not exactly a lot of scope to blog about. But they are a perfectly acceptable way to connect and relax at the end of a long day working and chasing young children.

How to connect on a Weekend morning

A new tradition has been developed on Sunday mornings, we have coffee or tea, and play some games.  Doing our quality time and dates in the morning is easier on us, we are both alert and have energy so we are able to do more together.   The thing is, we have little children, so whatever we do can’t have a million pieces, take a long time to set-up or take-down.  Unless, they happen to be going to the park for an hour with Grandpa, then we can.

Too tired for #datenight? Try a #breakfastdate with your sweetie. Click To Tweet

Here are 5 Games to play on a Breakfast Date with Young Children:

Mancala

Mancala

A new personal favourite of ours to play together.  The kids do like the colourful stones, but it’s easy to play even with distractions.

Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit

Trivial Pursuit

My amazing hubby bought me a travel (I think, it’s awfully small and doesn’t have a game board) Harry Potter Trivia.  Poor guy had no idea what he was in for, like he could possibly beat me at Harry Potter trivia!  It was an amazing gift and we love playing it now.

Mille Bourne

Card games

We like Mille Bourne, not too many cards to set up and the games chttp://www.raisingfairiesandknights.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=6710&action=editan be super short.  We usually only play one or two hands, not the whole game to 5000 points.  I like cribbage as well for ease of playing and being to play only a few hands at a time.

Board Games

Board Games

We like Monopoly and Settlers of Catan, but there are a lot of pieces, so we have to make sure the kids are distracted for awhile and we play a shorter version.

If Books

If Books

My sister uses these as wedding presents, a great way to open up conversations with people and connect on a different level.  Usually, with questions you wouldn’t even think of asking normally.  Such as, if you could have a dinner with three people, anyone alive or dead, who would they be.  If you could go on vacation right now, where would you go.  They are a really fun way to discover what someone is thinking about something when you may not know otherwise.

What are your favourite ways to connect with your partner while the kids are around and you are home?  Any fun ways to spend quality time while exhausted and on no sleep?

Vegetarian Gallo Pinto

Vegetarian Gallo Pinto - You need a good breakfast full of protein to start your day! Try this Costa Rican version of Vegetarian Gallo Pinto to get your day off to the right start.

Kayaking in Costa Rica

I love trying out breakfasts in different countries.   It’s nice to have something more filling than toast, cereal, or oatmeal.   As a vegetarian we need to have protein, especially when we will be going all day. One of my favourites was Vegetarian Gallo Pinto, which I had with my dad in the morning for breakfasts in Costa Rica.  My dad and I went on kayaking trips together and when you spend 4-8 hours a day paddling on a river you NEED to have a good breakfast to give you the energy to tackle the day.

Try out this amazing #costarican #vegetarian breakfast. #GalloPinto is full of #protein Click To Tweet

Perfect breakfast for traveling!

Kayak Surfing in Costa Rica

This is a super easy breakfast to make, it is even delicious for lunches and dinners.  It requires mostly ingredients you probably already have on hand. For non-meat eaters protein is always a consideration so luckily Vegetarian Gallo Pinto has lots of protein for anyone to eat.  My kids also loved eating this from a very early age as it is baby and toddler friendly.

What’s your favourite breakfast memory from your travels?  Where were you and what was it?

How Do Dinosaurs… Clothes Peg Dinosaur craft

This month’s craft for the Monthly Crafting Book Club is How Do Dinosaurs… Clothes Peg Dinosaur craft.  Have you ever read the book series How Do Dinosaurs…… by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague?  It’s a really fun series.  They cover a bunch of  different topics How Do Dinosaurs Go To School, How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs, How Do Dinosaurs Learn Their Colours, How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms, etc.  Tons of books to cover almost anything.  It’s a really fun series as it is a great learning tool.  It starts off with naughty dinosaurs doing the wrong thing, but usually funny.  Then it continues on to show how to do things the nice way.  A great and whimsical way to teach kids right or wrong in certain situations and a big hit with my kids and sister!

If you haven’t been following the Monthly Crafting Book Club you should!  Every month we focus on a different book, series, or theme geared towards kids.  A group of bloggers all contribute fun crafts or activities towards the theme to help you connect with your kids and help encourage their love of reading!  I chose to do How Do Dinosaurs… Clothes Peg Dinosaur craft.

This month's Monthly Crafting Book Club is the How Do Dinosaurs series, with a Clothes Peg Dinosaur Craft. Come see what the other bloggers came up with

Materials Needed:

materials needed

  • Fun Foam (not a lot) in varying colours
  • Clothes peg for each participant
  • A googly eye for each dinosaur
  • Glitter glue
  • Glue gun, scissors, and markers
  • How Do Dinosaurs … Book by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague

How to assemble:

example of dinosaur

  • Have kids colour one side (the outside edges) of a clothes peg while you roughly sketch out the top of a dinosaur head, and the Bee making her dinosaurmouth section (two separate sections) on fun foam and cut them out.
  • Next, distract kids and have them choose what colour glitter glue they want while you use the hot glue gun to glue the top and bottom of the face onto each clothes peg.  Add on a googly eye (if they are antsy and hovering I get them to point to where they want me to place it) and add on a dot at the end of the mouth for a snout.
  • Give the new dinosaur to the kids to saturate, I mean decorate, with glitter glue.
  • Let it dry for a few hours, or days depending on how much glitter glue they used.
  • Then VOILA, it’s ready to be played with!
